C. 2022 in memory of Virgil Abloh by Shani Axelrad.

As you know, hip-hop and street culture are huge sources of inspiration for me.

This project is part of a course I'm taking in Bezalel's master's program in visual communication.

On November 28th, 2021 I witnessed the world being affected by the news of the passing of Virgil Abloh.

I remember sitting in my car just bursting into tears, shocked by the fact that I'm even crying, I never knew the man, why am I feeling this deep sadness? Then, I was asked to create an object that will be “launched” to the future. The brief description included a specific requirement - to address an event that affects you directly or indirectly. I can't explain why, but without knowing I'm ever going to use it I decided to screenshot every post/story/video I encountered grieving Virgil. I find a lot of similarities between my thought process and Virgil’s philosophy on design, art, and culture.

Through his clear vision and words, he was able to “mentor” me.

I remember the struggle to convey my thoughts, wants, and needs as an undergrad student, I like philosophy but no “great” philosopher affected me the same way.

I see Virgil as the man who brought the Academy’s vision to the streets and made this perspective on life, art, design accessible for us all, especially young designers.

we are thought in school about the greatest people who wanted to change their lives and help make the world a better place, and that is exactly how I perceive him.

I believe that Virgil’s philosophy influenced me to be the best version of myself as a designer, to strive for greatness, to be authentic, and just get the confidence that I was lacking back then. His influence gave me the power to just see that the characteristics that I see as my weakness or the way I perceive myself, as the underdog, are the same characteristics that I can use as my strength, to find my voice as a designer and just to be able to relate to a cause, niche and a vision bigger than myself.

So this is my message to the future, I wanted to maintain his philosophy and impact as the virtuous genius he was. I never knew him but he certainly had an immense impact on our culture and he deserves recognition as one of the best.
