samplism

An Interdisciplinary Research Project in the Footwear Design Domain

"Everything I do references something that influenced me"- Virgil Abloh

SAMPLISM is a philosophical approach that examines the foundations of design language, the working processes, mediums, and aesthetics it encompasses. This approach questions what happens when we deeply explore the starting

points as designers and individuals. Are there similarities between those realms? And what can we derive from them? How does it manifest in conscious design, and what is the best way to implement it? The process of sampling is widespread in the music medium, especially in American hip-hop culture. How can this process find expression in the world of design? A profound exploration of the sampling process reveals that designers seeking to define their design language can adopt this principle and

empower their uniqueness in the flourishing design industry. Our identity is shaped by the era we live in and the technological means we create through.  SAMPLISM draws from the past, blends the present, and creates the future. The heart of the project lies in a case study that samples cultural symbols from three cultural and visual realms: Yemen, Romania, and American hip-hop culture.

The foundational principles of the SAMPLISM approach are embodied in an artifact, alongside a magazine presenting the core concepts of this perception.
